Dec. 14, 1861 – Mustered – Enlisted for 3 years (age 18) Private, Union Co. A, 12th Regiment, PA Calvery in either Del. City, Del. or Phila., PA

Feb 1, 1862 – Transferred to Union Co. E, 12th Regiment, PA Calv., Corporal

Nov., 1862 – Promoted to Sargent

June 15, 1863 – Captured at Winchester, VA, (Confederate General Rob. E. Lee’s Gettysburg Campaign of 1863: The Second Battle of Winchester VA, June 13 to 15, 1863.)

June 23, 1863 – Confined prisoner of war at Richmond, VA

Note: July 1 – 3, 1863 – Battle of Gettysburg

July 20, 1863 – Paroled prisoner of war

Jan 31, 1864 – Mustered out – at Harpers Ferry, VA

Feb. 1 or 29, 1864- Re-mustered for 3 years (age 21) at Kearneysville, VA as a Sargent Vet. Vol. ($100.00 bounty paid to him in installments)

July 24, 1864 – Wounded right elbow at Winchester, VA**.  Arm amputated above elbow, Sandy Hook Field Hospital, MD. (Also was possibly in a hospital in Baltimore, MD) (Confederate Gen. Early’s Valley Campaign of 1864: Second Battle of Kernstown, VA (outside of Winchester). Conf. calvary attacked Union advanced picket line at Kernstown, leading to a sharp calvary skirmish.)

Sept. 8, 1864 – June, 1865 – USA General Hospital, Broad and Cherry St. Phila. PA

March 1865 – Assigned to Co. 17, 2nd Batt., Vet. Reserves Corp (VRC)

Aug. 11, 1865 – Discharged as Sargent, with a Certificate of Disability

Sept. 21, 1869 – Married: Amelia Mary Bassler in Phila. PA – German Reform Church; had 5/6 children including William Gustav Hillebrand (buried in same grave as below at Mt. Moriah) Owned a news stand in South Philadelphia where he and his family lived.

Feb. 6, 1917 – Died: Phila. PA Bronchial Pneumonia, buried Feb 9, 1917 in Phila. PA, at Mt. Moriah Cemetery, Sec: St. John Circle/ Masonic Circle, Lot 4, Grave Division H.
