Edward Jerome Dougherty was born in Delaware and fought in the Civil War with the 4th Delaware Infantry Regiment C. This regiment was among those that witnessed Lee’s surrender at Appomattox court house. After the war he served as chief of police of Wilmington for two terms.
Afterward, Edward Dougherty moved to Philadelphia and joined the Pinkerton National Detective Agency. He was an assistant superintendent of the Pinkertons at the time of his death.
